paper gripper

My folded cards always stick out of the platen. They hit the gripper arm while printing, so at the end I disassembled the gripper. I now use paper strips to hold the card in place. I cut the tympan, slip the strip through it and with a tiny bit of glue I fix the strip on the backside of the tympan. It works pretty well, but how do you make grippers? In the past I sticked cardboard on the tympan but the tympan brake while removing the cardboard (and tympan is so rare!)

  2. Nice grippers! My Goldie does not have grippers so I just use photo corners. My press was originally designed for making large maps and my platen is stationary so it is a lot easier since my paper is not "moving". I improvise A LOT!

  3. My comment will be in English, writing German takes too long and would be full of mistakes. Have you got two arms that hold the gripper? If so, take one off and only use one on the side where your cards don't stick out. Other possibility is to take a 12 Punkt Geviertquadrat, you stick that with some glue unto the Tauenpapier and a larger piece of board onto the Geviertquadrat, that is an old printer's way of make a side gauge which doubles as a gripper. Your paper will butt up against the Geviertquadrat and the overlapping piece of board holds the card down, when you open the press. Avoid cutting into your Tauenpapier. When you print onto your tympan, don't use Waschmittel, but baby's talcum powder instead. Sprinkle some onto the printed area, and rub it in with your hand.

  4. Thomas! Thanks so much for your detail instructions. I try next time with a 12 pt Geviert and the overlapping paper. I'll get a shorter gripper from another printer, I just have a long one and don't want to saw this up. And I'll get me some baby talcum powder. :) Thanks again, Sabrina

    Thomas has the right idea.
Or, if the card to be printed sticks out both sides of the platen but not at the top, you can move the gripper bar up above the card and stick a piece of brass rule to the gripper so it comes down from above.

  6. Alan! Hope everything's fine in Adanaland :) Thanks for the comment, I try Thomas idea. Normally the card just sticks out on one side...
