Nein, das sind nicht meine Hände. Das sind die von Anna. Sie druckt gerade allerlei Postkarten von einem Sammelbogen für Ihren Shop Manos Verdes.
"Ist das deine Druckwerkstatt?" habe ich neugierig gefragt. "Nein, die meiner Mutter. Sie hat in den 80'ern eine alte Druckerei aufgekauft und mit Kindern und Jugendlichen gearbeitet. Die Presse ist eine Grafix." hat sie gesagt. "Und die Zitrone?" habe ich gefragt. "Die ist vielleicht aus der Druckerei vom Stern. Oder aus einer anderen alten Druckerei."
Vielleicht war sie ja mal auf dem Titeblatt vom Stern habe ich mir gedacht und mir die Zitronenkarten in die Küche gehängt. Die habe ich mit ihr getauscht. Gegen ein paar Stifte. Gedruckte Stifte natürlich.

No these aren't my hands. They belong to Anna from Manos Verdes. I recently swapped some cards with her, lemons against pencils. I asked if she has her own press and she said no, it's her mother's studio, an old print shop that she bought out in the 80'ies. They have a Grafix proof press. The lemon cliché may be from an old newspaper printshop she said. I hung the cards up in my kitchen.
Anna makes beautiful books and boxes besides the postcards, she has an Online-Shop on Dawanda and exhibits at Koppel 66 in Hamburg on all christmas weekends. (yes, christmas is coming!)

A while ago I received this print made by Armina from Type & Press. I like the mix of fonts and was wondering where she found them. I felt it was the right time for some questions.
(You know that's what letterpress people do; exchanging press names, beating one another with the press size and nice on-top functions {like adjustable type bed} and font styles – just kidding.)
Armina, you made this amazing print. I am curious where did you find these special typefaces?
Thanks! These lovely wood type characters come from the MIAT museum collection (Ghent, Belgium), where I'm volunteering since 2008. The printing department of the museum have rich collection of wood/ metal types of various sizes and styles as well as wide range of printing presses.
How long did it take you to set and print this poster?
It took me a day of typesetting, bringing it up to the same type height as the characters vary from Belgian to Dutch height, proofing and a weekend of printing. Well, I'm a bit slow printer :)
Why are you printing, what drives you?
I felt that technical possibilities create a distance between the designer and his creation. This is why I'm fascinated with working on the printing machines and movable type. It is tactile. There is all about the essence of typography. The limitations imposed by the medium stimulate creativity and force me to come up with inventive solutions, which ultimately has a liberating effect on the design.
What do you do besides letterpress?
I'm a freelance graphic designer working with my partner from our design and development studio Form Apparatus, based in Ghent. But all my spare time I spend at the printing workshop of the MIAT museum where I mainly design and print contemporary posters, specimens for the museum or experimenting on personal projects.

stick to what you do best

Irgendwann vor einigen Wochen habe ich plötzlich verstanden, dass ich das machen muß. Dass ich einfach einen Tag lang am Tisch stehen muß, Schubladen aufreißen, Sachen rausnehemen, ausprobieren, zusammenpuzzeln die nächste Schublade aufreißen, darin herumwühlen... wieder zu schieben. Den zweckentfremdeten Quarkbecher oder die alte Zigarrenschachtel hervorkramen und gucken was sich da versteckt. Und dann am besten alles stehen lassen und morgen noch mal drüber nachdenken. Deswegen ist der Tisch auch immer so unpraktisch vollgestellt. Deswegen fluche ich vor mich hin, wenn etwas von den Buchstaben-Grüppchen umfällt. Aber es hilft nichts. So arbeite ich.
Natürlich gibt es tolle Schriften von myfonts die hüpfen, winken und blinken und sagen: nimm mich, ich bin top hot und mit mir geht's schneller. Und ja, ich mache den ein oder anderen Tagesausflug in die digitale Welt und es wäre so viel einfacher 1000 Stück per Knopfdruck zu ordern anstatt mit Hand und Fuß jede Karte einzeln anzufassen und noch dreimal umzudrehen. Aber es hilft nichts. So arbeite ich nicht. Da springt kein Funke über. Und jetzt ist (->Notiz an mich selbst) Ende der Diskussion.
Was ich eigentlich sagen wollte ist: Kommt ihr im Sommer nach Berlin und möchtet an die Daheimgebliebenen eine Karte schreiben? Dann kann ich Euch da eine empfehlen: Die ist mit Blut Schweiß und Tränen gedruckt, mit Schubladen aufreißen und Buchstaben umfallen und dem ganzen Programm. Vor allem aber mit einem zufriedenen Lächeln im Gesicht. Smile.

This card pretty sums up everything about the way I work. I just didn't know that pulling out cases and boxes and looking through all the material, compose type, set it aside and make a mess on my table is so important to me.
For sure it would've been easier and even more quick to do the same on the computer and let it printed somewhere on a higher amount instead of touching every card three times while printing. When your body aches after.
But I need the mess. The process. The limitation of material I have. The challenge to take it from there and create something new with it.
I finally understood. If I start to forget it tell me again.
So hey, do you travel to Berlin this summer and want to send a card? It was kind of crazy to lock up this forme, but at the end I've printed them with a big smile on my face :)

Ich bin dran, hier die erste Farbe... schon von letzter Woche. Der Durchgang war eigentlich nur als Test gedacht. Vielleicht bekommen einige Tropfen eine andere Farbe, mal sehen. Mal ausprobieren. Hübsche Tropfen, Leute – Danke!
