Souvenir Souvenir
07.10.2009 • Berlin, Fun

--------
I am quite busy these days, so I wanted to share some pics of my desk to show you what I am working for. BUT it is such a mess and the photo I took is definitely terrible. I deleted it directly in the minute I made it. So what you see above is my newest berlin souvenir: a mini rubber in form of a trabbi (trabbi = trabant = retro eastern-german car, ->Film) but really too cute to use it. Isn't it?

Once upon a time

I came across this wonderful Flickr Set "printshop" from "depression press" about vintage ads and images of supplies for printer shops. And I love love love the drawing of "how to organize a composing room". Ha ha! Maybe I should think about arranging the furniture in my studio that way. Haha... I need a bigger office!
And when I am browsing trough someones pictures of presses and print supplies I become aware that printing was a really german thing. There are these Heidelberg printing machines I see on pictures from all around the world showing their name Heidelberg Windmill on the front. (->film) They let me think: oh, I can read it. oh, it's from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen... oh it's german, oh they still use it?... oh, that's c o o l.
I just borrowed a book from the local library about Gutenberg and how he came to letterpress. It's a children's book so it's not that boring to read history. Maybe I should share some of my consolidated knowledge here from time to time ;)
How to make a book for my stamps
02.10.2009 • craft, Inspiration, Papier
Ich habe in "how to make books" nachgeschaut, meinem neuen Lieblingsbuch mit den schön gestalteten Seiten.

Paper Source -> Envelope Accordion
--------
I found some vintage eastern german stamps on a fleamarket last weekend. At the moment they lying around and I was wondering how I can keep them safe. I saw a nice accordion file folder book on Flickr that Kathrin from Paperama created. This book keeps her stamps in colourful little pockets and I thought that's a really cool idea! So, how can I make my own?
I flip through the pages of "how to make books", which is actually my favourite book. There are so many inspiring how-to's shown, but not that special one with pockets. So I browsed here and there and read blogs over blogs and then I found an easy and amazing way of creating an accordion file folder book by Paper Source. I'll definitely try this but tomorrow is a bank holiday in Germany, so the shops are closed and I won't get any nice envelopes. I have to wait 'til monday... args.
Lest hier
-------- My pool of type is getting bigger. This week I say hello to a new little font, which has unfortunately just one of each letter. So this won't became a "brotschrift". This is the german word for a type which is used every day to set much text in 8pt-10pt. Sorry, I don't know the english word for this "bread-type". Anyone knows?
if I had a shop: Naming
01.10.2009 • Inspiration, Letterpress, Web

--------
Beside all the market research, I have to find a name and a logo that represents me and my little press. Many german letterpress printers choose a name for their business, which includes the word press. They give their press a name. Like "Katzengraben-Presse", "Einhandpresse" oder "Berliner Handpresse" etc. And many american letterpress studios do it. To give an old dirty black machine the name "Black Pearl Press" is truly creative, isn't it? I like the way the old traditional craft of this business comes out through using the word "press", but I don't like the word itself. Should I think about a name for my little red press that stands for my business? Will it be a german name? Do I want an international name? I don't want it to be too serious, neither too fancy.
That. Is. Quite. Difficult.
It has to end up with a name that sounds well and fits my business. And that will look amazing on my window, if I had a shop like Greenwich Letterpress.
