Letztes Jahr erstand ich auf dem Mauerparkflohmarkt ein altes Mathebuch für die 10. Klasse aus der ehemaligen DDR von 1988. Neulich fiel es mir wieder in die Hände und ich fand die Illustrationen zu den Übungen über Volumenberechnungen einfach klasse. Sehen doch aus wie Zelte, oder? Nur weiß ich jetzt nicht, was ich damit machen könnte und nun sind sie schon aufgeklebt. Tja, so ist das...

Last year I bought an old maths school book from the former german democratic republic from 1988. Until last week it has been a dust collector but now the illustrations turned out to be tents on a camping ground. Cutting and composing was fun, but I don't know what to do with this now...

Diesen Sonntag heißt es wieder: Presse und Papier ab in den Fahrradanhänger und losgeradelt zum Maybachufer. Es ist wieder Sideseeing-Markt und damit ihr auch Lust bekommt hier ein kleiner Vorgeschmack. Noch etwas wackelig, denn es ist einer der ersten Versuche mit der neuen Kamera.

Eigentlich fehlt mir für Linolschnitt die Geduld. Wie ärgerlich, wenn man abrutscht und das Motiv dadurch kaputt macht. Daher dachte ich; starte mit etwas leichtem. Naja, abgerutscht bin ich trotzdem, um genau zu sein: beim ersten P. Aber halb so wild. Die Linolplatte ist übrigens auf 19 mm MDF geklebt und mit zusätzlichen Papierbögen auf 23,56 mm Schrifthöhe gebracht. Mit der Hand eingewalzt und mit der Korrex gedruckt.

I don't have the patience to carve. Normally. But I tried with a simple one and it worked. I glided off just one time: look at the first P. It didn't took so much time, I carved during a boring movie at the weekend. Then I mounted the lino on 19 mm MDF and shimmed the back with some paper sheets to get type high. I inked by hand and used the Korrex for printing.

Today I laughed as I found the map of Verona in the pocket of my rain jacket. It seems I am the sort of: yes I collect everything but back at home it's lying around everywhere. (no, you couldn't choose this in the form) So, today was a typical friday in the atelier: cleaning, sorting and getting rid of some things. See my tools are getting bigger :) he he. Next week will be a busy one, many things to print. I am really curious which cities you have choosen, I'll close the questionnaire next friday. Have a nice weekend!

For several times I thought about printing a series of travel journals in my berlin book style. But I am not sure about the cities I should take and wether the size of the book or the plain pages are the best. So you can help me find that out by answering nine questions. I am not the chef of our kitchen (thank god!) but I am the boss of making labels. Sticky paper labels? No way! I use my dymo for everything, not just for strawberry jam. For boxes, ring folders, drawers and everything one could label. It takes a bit time, but my executive chef is already thrilled. :)

Hooray, I finally managed to get things in my etsy shop. Okay, short descriptions aren't the best and maybe have some english mistakes, but I made it as good as possible. There's always room for improvement :) Have a nice week everyone! I'll go now and try the temperature in my atelier.

Jede kleinste Druckversuch endet zur Zeit im Schweißausbruch, daher meide ich in diesen Tagen das Atelier mit seinen (letztens gemessenen) 34°C und arbeite von zu Haus. Und was macht man dort am meisten? Richtig: surfen! Deswegen gibt es heute wieder einen Klick-Tipp für euch {hello memo} I like!--------

Heute haben mich die Arbeiten von Chris Campe vom Hocker gerissen. Besonders als ich sah, dass sie die Buchstaben und deren Schatten aus zuvor bedruckten Blätter ausgeschnitten hat. Wow. Wie aufwendig! Aber welch schöne Idee, oder? Die Hamburgerin verlässt allerdings bald den Norden um in Chicago ihren Master zu machen. Und ich wünsche ihr viel Glück {denn Erfolg ist ihr sicher}! Ich glaube es waren die zwei heißesten Tage, die ich jemals in Berlin erlebt habe. Gut, dass ich Postkarten zum Luft-zu-fächeln hatte. Aber selbst das brachte mich ins schwitzen. Verständlich, dass die Berliner da lieber an den See geflüchtet sind, als durch den Wedding zu shoppen. Das hätte ich auch gemacht :) Jana und ich hatten aber trotzdem Spaß und allen die trotz Hitze Hallo sagten ein Herzliches Dankeschön! Bis zum nächsten Jahr und dann hoffentlich wieder mit so netten Standnachbarn wie Zoe Navah, die bestimmt grade schwitzend im Auto auf dem Heimweg nach Frankfurt/Main sitzen.

I guess these were the sunniest days ever in berlin. It was hot hot hot. So most of the berliners drove to the lakes and didn't shop at the market, what I totally understand. Jana and me had fun though it was a nice weekend with nice neighbours Zoe Navah, lots of iced coffee and new projects in mind. I want to thank all of you who stand the heat and said hello; thanks so much and I hope to see you again next year.

So langsam bereite ich mich auf das Wochenende vor. Hefte müssen gebunden, Karten gefalzt, und Banderolen geschnitten werden damit pünktlich zum Samstag genügend Dinge am Start sind. Ein paar Accessoires dürfen auch nicht fehlen, denn es ist ja schließlich Fashion Week.
Letztes Jahr war ich noch als Besucher bei Wedding Dress auf der Suche nach witzigen Dingen und die Handpresse war noch ein Hirngespinst. Nun ja, dieses Jahr steh ich selbst dort, übrigens zusammen mit Jana alias Basteltüte und ihren lustigen Bastelbögen. Schaut mal die Berliner Dönerbude. :-)

I have to get ready for the weekend. I bound some journals, folded cards and cut belly bands. Did some new photobooks and notepads and will take some buttons with me to the market. Last year I was just a visitor at Wedding Dress, but time's changed and this weekend I'll have a booth together with Jana from Basteltuete. She makes funny cut-out illustrations, mostly about Berlin. See her snack bar "king of kebab".

Zum Wochenanfang habe ich hier ein paar Bücher für eure Merkliste. Über Impressive vom Gestalten Verlag habe ich ja schon berichtet, aber es gibt noch ein paar Bücher, die einige Letterpress Design Studios und ihre Arbeiten vorstellen. Zum Beispiel erscheint demnächst bei Chronicle Books das Buch Little Book of Letterpress geschrieben von Charlotte Rivers.
Das gleiche Buch ist bereits unter einem anderen Titel, nämlich Reinventing Letterpress: Prints by Contemporary Practitioners bei dem Verlag RotoVision in Brighton erschienen.
Und Anfang August erscheint Adventures in Letterpress
bei Mark Batty Publisher, das neben den Arbeiten auch mit Interviews einiger Studios gespickt ist. Geschrieben übrigens von Brandon Mise, dem Kopf von Blue Barnhouse Letterpress.

There will be some new design books about letterpress out now this summer. Beside the book Impressive from Gestalten the folks from Chronicle Books will publish Little Book of Letterpress which is already available under the name Reinventing Letterpress by RotoVision. Charlotte Rivers wrote it.

Heute hatte ich nordischen Besuch im Atelier. Helmut {mag dem ein oder anderen Leser hier schon bekannt sein} hat mir – während er interessante Stories aus der Welt des Buchdrucks erzählte – einen professionellen Aufzug an der Adana eingerichtet. Und durch seine exakte Beschreibung konnte ich nach seinem Besuch Ruck Zuck den Zylinder der Korrex mit einem neuen Aufzug versehen und hatte nach 15 Minuten meinen ersten Druck. Aha! So gehts besser, wunderbar. Danke nach HH :)

Today Helmut from Hamburg came for a visit. Beside interesting stories from the printing scene he did a professional packing on my Adana. And he told me which screws to pull for changing the packing on the proof press. So after he left I was able to change the tympan and get my first print on the Korrex. Yay. Many many thanks!

I like my new embossing plate. The positioning of the male and female part is a bit difficult, but after that it makes so much fun. That's why my desk is now covered with embossed paper sheets for I-don't know-what. Only the tiny lines didn't show up, see the curve of the "a". Tomorow I'll give them another try.
