Wenn etwas mit englischen Briefmarken im Kasten liegt ist es meistens von Alan. Und immer enthält es was handgedrucktes. Na, hättet ihr gedacht, dass man einen Barcode mit Bleilinien setzen und drucken kann? Welcher Preis dahinter steckt werde ich mal bei ReWe an der Ecke testen. Alans Rundbriefe The Rambling Urchin haben mich angeregt demnächst mal öfter was zu drucken um es zu verschicken. Ohne Anlaß, einfach das, worauf man Lust hat, mal schauen ob ich das hinkriege. Alan sammelt übrigens Scans rund um die Adana, die kann man auf seinem Flickr Stream entdecken. Höchsten Respekt habe ich vor seiner Werkstatt; The Hedgehog Press agiert auf kleinstem Raum. Fünf Pressen könnt ihr entdecken, auf denen er hoffentlich noch viele The Rambling Urchin Karten drucken wird.

Look at this, aren't these cards cool? They are printed by Alan from the Hedgehog Press and I am lucky they appeared in my postbox. The finger card put a smile on my face and I'd like to check the barcode in my grocery store around the corner. And it seems he collects old logo clichés from companies. I like the idea of printing something that pops up in your mind and sending this around to people. Something I'll think about this year. I miss just printing for pleasure never mind if it would be a seller or a dust collector or who's the target group. But back to Alan, he's a truly Adana expert, if you look at his flickr stream you'll find interesting pieces about the Adana times. Also interesting lock ups and presses. And his pressroom is so organized! You can spot 5 presses, the Model Platen is where he'll hopefully keep printing The Rambling Urchin cards on and on and on... Thanks so much!

Seit vorletzter Woche hängt ein hübscher und verrückter Typo Kalender bei mir an der Wand. Den hatte mir Claudio mitgebracht als er im Atelier zu Besuch war. Er bildet zusammen mit acht Freunden die Officina Tipografica Novepunti in Mailand. Sie verbringen zur Zeit jede freie Minute in ihrer Werkstatt, in der sie sich Lettern und Pressen teilen und gemeinsam versuchen ihren Heidelberger Tiegel zum Laufen zu kriegen. Der Kalender wurde aber auf einer pedalbetriebenen Presse gedruckt und es hat jeder mitgewirkt. Mal hat der eine und mal der andere das Blatt gestaltet und die Lettern gesetzt. Alle probieren sich und alle haben Bock drauf. Das sieht man, oder? Mille grazie Claudio!

The other week Claudio came for a visit and brought a crazy cool typo calender. He printed this with his friends from Officina Tipografica Novepunti in Milano. I had fun with spotting letters from type I also have in my cases and we talked about their foot pedal press, Heidelberg Windmill and a proof press they'll get. Together they are nine people who share letters and presses and the motivation to dig into letterpress. That is what speaks through their artwork, they have fun with printing. I am glad I got one of their Typocalendario, mille grazie Claudio!

Schrift spielerisch einsetzen – da rennt man ja bei mir offene Türen ein. Ich habe in den letzten Wochen drei inspirierende Drucksachen erhalten, die ich hier mal zeigen will.
"A play with V" ist ein hübsches Büchlein, das mir Jens aus Dänemark geschickt hat. Komplett handgesetzt, auf seiner dänischen Andruckpresse Eickhoff gedruckt und handgebunden. Sehr sehr schön. Jens – bogtrykkeren – ist ein flickr Kontakt von mir, sein Photostream bietet noch mehr Bilder von dem Büchlein und einen Einblick in seine Werkstatt. Er gibt auch Workshops für die unter Euch, die in Dänemark wohnen oder Urlaub machen.
Mich hat das Büchlein so beeindruckt, da ich um die Arbeit weiß, die in schräg gesetzten Texten steckt. Im Computer können wir eine Zeile rotieren lassen, wie es uns passt, aber mit Blei? Man muss die ganzen Lücken mit Blindmaterial füllen und alles richtig schließen, damit es nicht um- oder rausfällt. Schaut hier. (Und hinterher alles wieder wegsortieren...) Ich vermute das Setzen hat so seine Zeit gedauert. Aber es sieht total gut aus! Tak, tak Jens!

Playing with type is totally up my alley. I received three inspiring works in the last weeks that I'd like to show, starting today with the book Jens sent from Denmark.
"A play with V" is a little book, handset and hand printed on his danish proof press Eickhoff. Also hand bound. Awesome! Jens – bogtrykkeren – is a flickr contact of mine and his photostream is full of interesting pictures from his space, his letters and typecases and his press. You can also see more pictures of the little book there and if you are interested in a copy drop him an email. (And he gives workshops, if you are located in denmark.)
I am thrilled by the graphics because I know setting type that way, diagonal or somewhat vertical, makes the typesetters life not easy. One has to fill all gaps with spacing and make sure that everything is locked and won't fall off. See here. I guess he spent hours to set and print this book. But what a beauty. Tak, tak Jens!
Einiges findet seinen Platz wie von selbst. Anderes braucht länger. Manches wandert erstmal von der einen Ecke in die andere. Und alles, was zu sehr stört landet temporär *zwinker* in der Schublade. Falls es da noch reinpasst.
Oh, wie zeitraubend ist das alles. Nun fordern unerledigte Drucksachen eine Wochenendschicht. Na, selber schuld.

Some things find the right place on their own. Others move from one corner to the other. And everything that bothers me ends up in a drawer. If there's still space in it.
What a time killer that is. Now I am late with some print jobs and need to work this weekend. Blame me.
Eins, zwei oder drei, letzte Chance vorbei. Ob es so wirklich richtig steht, seh ich, wenn's ans Drucken geht.

The decision how to arrange the presses in the new room was not quite easy. The only way to see if it works this way is to start printing again. I do so now.
