Heute reisen wir virtuell bis nach Japan und schauen uns an wie Itsuko Naka ihre besonderen Collagen erstellt. Sie schneidet ihre Illustrationen aus zuvor bedrucktem Papier und legt dann ihre Motive, inspiriert von der Natur in und um Kyoto, aus den Papieren zusammen.

Today the papercut artist Itsuko Naka takes us into her japanese home where she's working on her collages. She inks the paper before cutting to give it a unique structure and colour and then turns it into nature inspired illustrations.

Hi Itsuko, please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
Hello, I’m Itsuko Naka and I live in Kyoto, Japan. It is the country with a mountain and the river. I love watching birds, scenery of the seasons and nature all around me.
I get a lot of inspiration from there when making art. I work with the paper I painted and cut and sometimes do silkscreen printing.

Where do you work mostly and is that a temporarily setting or a permanent corner in your home?
I work mostly in a permanent small corner in my home. It is a corner of the bedroom but sometimes I work in temporarily setting (dining table etc.). That differs depending on the work. (The corner in the picture is neatly arranged in the time of not having worked. During work, it is scattered.)

Which equipment and tools do you need for doing your artwork? Where do you store it?
I paint paper in a color with brush, roller, linoleum, piece of wood, crayon and so on.
I put a small shelf beside the desk which usually works and store them there.

A creative process is mostly not done in a certain time. Do you have a place where you can have things laying around when the family is coming home or do you need to put everything away?
I am living by two persons with my husband so I relatively have free time. When work is the middle, it places as it is, without tidying up. It's alright because the space to use is small.

I love paper and collect scraps, books, maps, envelopes and so on. Do you have criteria for collecting things because they can take up so much space… how do you store it?
I don't collect things in particular a lot but I sometimes pick up a stone, leaf, flower, pinecone and so on from the outside. They are displayed in the various places in my home.
Cloth or the art supplies which I used for work production take much space. They are put away in the closet.

How do your family members like your art making at home?
My family supports my art making at home and provides time and the place.
We respect time and space for each to do a favorite thing.

Ich bin dran, hier die erste Farbe... schon von letzter Woche. Der Durchgang war eigentlich nur als Test gedacht. Vielleicht bekommen einige Tropfen eine andere Farbe, mal sehen. Mal ausprobieren. Hübsche Tropfen, Leute – Danke!

Vor längerer Zeit als bei warmen Temperaturen und offener Ateliertür draußen ein Sommerregen niederprasselte dachte ich, dass Regentropfen auch ein schönes Element für eine Collage seien und habe über Facebook einen kleinen Aufruf gestartet. Und jetzt wird gedruckt.

Jemand hatte ein Stadttor geschnitzt und jemand anderes eine Art Burg, so dass ich fand es müßte eine geschlossene kleine Stadt sein, anstatt ein flächiges Muster oder eine lockere Ansammlung an Häusern. Welche Farbe ich drucken wollte war mir schleierhaft. Irgendwann spukte mir die blaue Stunde im Kopf herum und ich mußte unbedingt einen Verlauf ausprobieren, bei dem der Hintergrund immer heller wird.

Für den Druck wurde jede Häuser Reihe separat auf eine Platte geklebt und nacheinander gedruckt. Es war kniffelig die richtige Position zu finden. Die zwei hinteren Reihen mußten mit einer Schablone aus Papier maskiert werden, damit die Häuser nicht vollständig abdrucken, sondern eben im Hintergrund bleiben. Es war fraglich ob der nachfolgende Druck dann passgenau an die richtige Stelle kommt, ich habe so etwas noch nie vorher gemacht. Es hat auch nicht so hundertpro geklappt, aber fast. Wieder was gelernt!
Am Ende des Freitag Abends stand ich dann zufrieden in einem Haufen blauer Blätter, von denen viele halb ausgeschnitten oder drei-bis viermal bedruckt waren – eigentlich ganz spannend – und ich konnte zwei gelungene Drucke ausmachen. Jetzt werde ich die Häuser einscannen und weiter verarbeiten... ich weiß noch nicht, vielleicht zu Geschenkpapier oder irgendwas. Mal sehen.

Somebody carved a town gate and another one a kind of castle, so I felt it had to be a closed composition instead of a pattern or a scattered arrangement. As the term blue hour appeared someday in my mind I went straight ahead to mix blue with white to get a gradient.
Each row had to be on a seperate plate. After I figured out the position of each row I realised I had to mask the background rows with a paper stencil to hide the bottoms of the houses. I never worked with a mask before and I was wondering if the following sheet would be printed in registry. Uh, it came nearly close.
At the end of the day the floor was covered with blue paper, mostly half-cut and three or four times printed. The air smelled of ink. I was satisfied and happily managed to get two good prints. Now I am thinking of where to go from here. Scan it and make wrapping paper or something else. I don't know yet, we'll see.

Eure Häuser sind zwischenzeitlich vom Ende des Tisches auf einen Stuhl und unter einen anderen Stapel Papier gewandert. Diese Woche nehme ich einen neuen Anlauf. Es ist halt ein Prozess, ich muß selbst mehr Geduld haben. Am Wochenende habe ich geschaut, was andere so mit Häusern anstellen. Was für hübsche Sachen. Ob es schlau war zu gucken was andere machen? Naaa... bin ich mir nicht so sicher.

The test prints from your linocut houses ended up under a pile of paper. This week I have some time to try again. I do actually like that kind of creative process. I just have to trust and be more patient. Yesterday I looked up what others created with houses. Lovely stuff, but I assume it's contra productive to see what others do...

Neulich habe ich eure Briefe geöffnet. Bislang sind dreizehn Häuser eingetroffen und vielleicht kommen die letzten zwei ja noch rechtzeitig bevor es los geht. Ich bin selbst sehr gespannt wie und was es wird. Am Wochenende heißt es also Gedanken machen.

Ich brauche ein Haus. Ein kleines süßes, ein dickes gedrungenes, ein schlankes hohes und vielleicht noch eins mit Türmchen. Eigentlich brauche ich 15 Stück, damit ich eine Stadt drucken kann. Seid ihr dabei? Schnitzt ihr mir ein Haus aus Linol?

Eure Häuschen werden als kleine Stadt in einem Produkt enden, das in limitierter Auflage unter dem Label "Small Caps & friends" im Online-Shop erhältlich sein wird. So versuche ich das ganze Projekt zu refinanzieren. Wenn alles gut läuft möchte ich jeden Monat ein neues Thema drucken. :)

Jeder Teilnehmer erhält ein kleines Dankeschön im Austausch gegen den Linolschnitt per Post, anders als bei der letzten Aktion wird es nicht der Druck bzw. das Produkt sein, das am Ende aus allen Einsendungen entsteht. Bitte hinterlasst mir eure Post- und eMail Adresse auf einem Zettel zu eurem Linol-Häuschen, damit ich Euch kontaktieren kann. Meine Adresse findet ihr hier.

Die Teilnehmeranzahl muß ich leider auf 15 Leute beschränken. Alle Plätze sind bereits vergeben, vielen Dank! Do you remember the last project let's print a collage together?
The new idea is to print a little town. That's why I ask you to carve a house. A little, a cozy, a plump or a slim house. Or probably one with a little tower?

You'll receive a little thank you letter in return. Different to the former project I can't send you the final product which will be printed from your linocut. I'll create a limited range of products which will be available for sale in my online shop under the "brand": Small Caps and friends. That's how I'll try to refinance material and work time costs. I hope to realize a new theme each month.

So jetzt aber! Dieses ist der dritte Streich. Noch trocknen und dann ab dafür. Vielen Dank für Eure Kommentare gestern! Ich freue mich, dass es Euch die Drucke gefallen.
So einige Ideen für weitere Collagen spuken mir im Kopf herum. Ich muß aber zuerst das Prozedere überdenken bevor wir die Aktion wiederholen können. Vermutlich müßte ich die Teilnehmerzahl begrenzen und über eine Gebühr meine Kosten decken. Mal gucken. Über meinen Newsletter bleibt ihr auf dem Laufenden. Habt einen schönen Herbsttag!

Also, die erste Collage lasse ich nun so wie sie ist. Bei der zweiten bin ich unschlüssig und habe weitere Entscheidungen auf morgen vertagt. Es gibt immer noch Linol-Blätter, die gedruckt werden wollen, sieht ganz nach einem dritten Durchgang aus.
Manches Linol ist ganz weich und anderes ist sehr dünn. Interessant, dass dann doch so unterschiedliches Material benutzt wird. Das harte geht zum Drucken am besten. Ich habe übrigens mit Sprühkleber alles aufgeklebt, manches Blatt klebt immer noch...
Am Freitag geht dann alles zur Post. Die Selbstabholer können gern vorher vorbeikommen, nur bitte sicherheitshalber ankündigen. (Selbstabholer klingt ja fast nach Riesen-Druckerei, he he.)

So the first one is finished. I am not sure about the second print and left it for now. There're still lino leaves to print... I guess I'll do a third run.
I got a variety of material. Some thin lino, some smooth and some thick, quite challenging to print. I used spray mount to stick them on MDF and some still have a sticky back... sorry. I gonna send it on friday to you guys from UK, Netherland and Italy! :)

Ungeahnte Schwierigkeiten. Die ersten Drucke mit der zweiten Farbe haben mir ja so gar nicht gefallen, so wirklich überhaupt nicht. Die Anordnung und die daraus entstehenden Überschneidungen konnte ich einfach nicht so lassen. Da half nur einen Schritt zurück machen, jedes Blatt einzeln drucken und erstmal eine stimmige Komposition finden. Puzzlearbeit.
Schwupps waren die Abendstunden rum und nun bin ich auf dem Weg zu einem 90. Geburtstag im Markgräflerland. Da, wo auf der Wetterkarte immer die Sonne scheint. Montag geht's hier weiter, Danke für's Lesen und Schreiben, eure Blätter sind super!

Unexpected difficulties came on my way. I got real frustrated with printing the second layer. It didn't look nice whatever I tried. So I did a step back and printed each leaf separate. Cut them out and arranged them to find the best composition. Like a puzzle. Time went by so fast while playing.
Now I'll leave Berlin today to celebrate someones 90th birthday. Will be back for work on monday to take a fresh look at the collage.

Am schönsten ist der Moment, wenn man den allerersten Abzug macht.
Letztendlich habe ich eure Linolschnitte in zwei Gruppen geteilt und drucke zwei verschiedene Collagen. Sonst wird es einfach zu voll.
Die größeren Blätter bilden den Hintergrund, die kleineren kommen in einer etwas dunkleren Farbe in den Vordergrund. Ich hoffe ich schaffe die zweite Farbe heute. Da sind erst noch Weihnachtskarten einzutüten und Einladungen zu prägen. :)

Finally I decided to print two different collages. I've divided all your linocuts in two groups. The larger leaves build the background, the smaller ones will be printed on top. So I hurry on with the daily business to print again tonight.

Heute habe ich eure ganze Post aufgemacht. Tausend Dank. Es sind so viele, dass ich mich schon frage, wie ich die alle auf ein Blatt kriege. :)
Und ich hoffe ich kann eure Linolschnitte auch wieder euren Namen zuordnen, habe mir zu dem Foto ein Organigramm aufgezeichnet, he he. Nun geht's los, Fotos gibt's dann Montag. Schönes herbstliches Wochenende Euch allen und vielen Dank für's Mitmachen!

At some point I stopped counting. :) Thanks to all participants. I opened all letters today and laid them down on the floor to get an overview. It's quite challenging to imagine how the print could look like. Have to try some arrangements first. Pictures on monday. Happy weekend to all of you.

Der Hammer. Der erste Linolschnitt war schon heute in der Post. Geschickt von Karoline. Oh mann, so toll. Tausend-und-ein-Dankeschön! Ich bin ziemlich baff und super happy über Euer Feedback und freue mich auf die nächsten Blätter. Jetzt geht's wirklich los, ich glaube ich werde nervös.

Eine Idee spukt mir schon eine Weile im Kopf herum: Ich würde gern mal Sachen von Euch drucken. Von Euch Lesern. Und bevor der Weihnachtsstress hier ganz das Ruder übernimmt, probiere ich das jetzt einfach mal aus.
Jedes Jahr im Herbst schwebt mir ein Druck vor Augen; eine Collage aus Herbstblättern. Bisher habe ich es nie geschafft die Collage umzusetzen und jetzt kommt Ihr ins Spiel.
Für einen hübschen mehrfarbigen Blätterwald brauche ich einen Linolschnitt von Euch. Nichts aufwendiges nur ein Blatt. Die Form und Größe des Blattes ist völlig egal, krumm, schief, klein, groß, illustrativ oder naturalistisch. Alles ist erlaubt. Ich werde von allen Linolschnitten zusammen einen Druck machen, den jeder Teilnehmer als Gegenleistung erhält. Habt ihr Lust?
Euren Linolschnitt brauche ich bis nächsten Dienstag 25.09.2012 an meine Adresse. Ich bin schon gespannt, ob und was da kommt. Wie aufregend.

I thought about printing a collage with autumn leaves for years. I never did it. I never found the time to carve a few leaves in lino. So for this year I need your help. Let's do a collage together. If you carve a little leaf in lino – no matter what size or style just as you like – I'll print a collage from all linocuts that reach me (address here) by next tuesday 25th September. You'll get one print in return for your lino.
So what do you think, are you in? I am so curious if this is going to work out :)

Letztes Jahr erstand ich auf dem Mauerparkflohmarkt ein altes Mathebuch für die 10. Klasse aus der ehemaligen DDR von 1988. Neulich fiel es mir wieder in die Hände und ich fand die Illustrationen zu den Übungen über Volumenberechnungen einfach klasse. Sehen doch aus wie Zelte, oder? Nur weiß ich jetzt nicht, was ich damit machen könnte und nun sind sie schon aufgeklebt. Tja, so ist das...

Last year I bought an old maths school book from the former german democratic republic from 1988. Until last week it has been a dust collector but now the illustrations turned out to be tents on a camping ground. Cutting and composing was fun, but I don't know what to do with this now...

Gestern hatte ich einen Girlandenflash. Eigentlich habe ich ihn immer noch, aber das Papier ist mir ausgegangen. Erst nahm ich nur einfache Karten. Dann hatte ich noch ein paar Bierdeckel in der Schublade, die mußten auch dran glauben. Und dann versteckten sich noch ein paar Hangtags weiter hinten, zwischen den ausrangierten Kulis...

Es hat so einen Spaß gemacht. Nach dem ich alles vollgestempelt hatte, habe ich erst gesehen, dass eine lange Girlande entsteht, wenn man die Teile dementsprechend zusammenpuzzelt. Gedacht, getan. Foto gemacht und zack! Fertig.

Und jetzt gehe ich ein paar Moleskine kaufen, die haben viele Seiten...
